Why Magnesium is Important for your Heart

Why Magnesium is Important for your Heart

February is American Hearth Month, that time of year where we focus our attention on what we can do to make our hearts healthy and strong. Unfortunately, over 600,000 people die each year of heart disease, most of which could be prevented with proper diet and lifestyle choices.

A key mineral to heart health is Magnesium, which is why it is the main ingredient in Mindful Mixture's product CHARLEY. We need Magnesium for so many things, yet most of the population is still deficient.

According to Dr. Carolyn Dean in her book The Magnesium Miracle, she lists many reasons why Magnesium is important for your heart, however, I wanted to highlight the following:

  1. “Magnesium prevents muscle spasms of the blood vessels in the heart, and in the peripheral blood vessels, both which can lead to a heart attack”

  2. “Magnesium prevents calcium buildup in cholesterol plaque in arteries, which leads to clogged arteries, atherosclerosis and stroke”

We know that magnesium helps prevent calcium buildup in the muscles which leads to leg cramping during endurance events, but we now know that it can also prevent calcium buildup in our arteries as well. Those same muscle spasms that happen in your legs can also be happening in your heart.

Food sources of magnesium include avocados, bananas, black beans, edamame, leafy greens, wild-caught salmon, pumpkin, and chia seeds. Aim for several servings each day. Soaking in an Epsom salt bath several times a week, and/or daily applications of CHARLEY are other efficient ways of getting this important mineral into your body!
